Pune : Farmers of Maval and surrounding villages are firm on their stance that they will continue to oppose any move by civic authority to start the Pavana pipeline project in future with the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) plans to move the high court against Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) for it.
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had asked the state authority to lift the stay on the Pavana pipeline project, so that the civic administration could restart work on it again. However, local farmers have opposed it tooth-and-nail.
The BKS secretary Balkrishna Narayan Pingle, 64, had sustained a deep shock last year in Maval firing incidence, in which four farmers were killed and several injured.
Reacting to PCMC’s keenness to start the project, Pi
ngle told DNA, “Whenever any effort is made to start the Pavana pipeline project, we will oppose it. Our farmers had shed their blood to stop this project. How can we forget that? MWRRA belongs to the state government, and they submitted an inquiry report in favour of PCMC. Hence, we plan to move court against MWRRA.”
Pingle added, “There are various ways in which PCMC can resolve the water needs of the citizens.”
Maval Kisan Sangh Kriti Samiti’s (MKSKS) Shankar Shelar said, “We’ll oppose the Pavana pipeline work.” Farmers have been agitating against the project since the last four years.
