PUNE: The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh has organised a farmers' rally from October 8 to 22 to press for their demands including a procurement price of Rs 4,000 per tonne for sugarcane and Rs 3,000 per quintal for onion. The rally will kick-start from Dharmabad near Nanded.
The Sangh has also demanded uninterrupted supply of electricity for farmers. In the last few weeks, other farmers' organisations set up rallies for the same demands and one of the factions had attacked and damaged some vehicles carrying agricultural produce to major cities last Sunday.
Mauli Tupe, head of state unit of the Kisan Sangh said, "The farmers' rally will reach Indapur taluka in Pune district on October 14. Public rallies have been organised at Patas, Hadapsar, Chakan and Shikrapur, which will be addressed by various leaders of the Kisan Sangh. The rally will leave Pune district on October 16 and enter Ahmednagar district for further campaign." The rally will conclude at Gadhinglaj taluka of Kolhapur on October 22, said Tupe.
Government policies should be farmer friendly and it should benefit the farmer and not alone the common man, Tupe added. He further said that the government has not completed rehabilitation of the families of farmers, who have committed suicide. The government should complete it on priority.
Tupe said, "Shortage of labour is one of the serious issues for the farming community. Higher wages can not be offered because a farmer's income is low. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which has ensured that the unemployed community get 100 days work every year, government should ask the unemployed class to work on farms and earn for their livings. If they are good, farmers will continue with the labour.
